The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has suspended Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw following his role in the dramatic walk-off protest during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
CAF announced the suspension in a statement released on Monday, citing breaches of competition regulations after Senegal’s technical bench and players left the pitch in protest late in the final, an action that disrupted the closing moments of the match and triggered widespread controversy.
The incident occurred after a series of disputed officiating decisions, with Senegal’s camp strongly objecting to a late call they believed unfairly influenced the outcome of the match.
Television footage showed Thiaw leading protests from the touchline before the team walked off the pitch, forcing a temporary stoppage.
In its statement issued on Monday, CAF said Thiaw’s conduct was “inconsistent with the principles of fair play and respect for match officials,” adding that the suspension takes immediate effect.
The football governing body did not specify the duration of the ban but noted that further sanctions could follow pending the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings.
Reacting to the decision, officials of the Senegal Football Federation expressed disappointment, insisting the coach acted in defense of his players amid what they described as “serious officiating lapses” in a high-pressure final. They also indicated that an appeal may be considered.

The development comes just days after Senegal’s AFCON campaign, overshadowing what had been a strong tournament showing for the Teranga Lions.
With crucial international fixtures on the horizon, the suspension could force Senegal to appoint an interim coach if the sanction is upheld.
CAF reiterated on Monday its commitment to discipline and respect for match officials, stressing that grievances must be addressed through formal channels rather than actions that disrupt matches.
