Army Debunks Mutiny Rumours, Reaffirms Troops’ Loyalty

The Nigerian Army has firmly denied a viral online publication alleging that its personnel were considering a mutiny over issues related to salaries and welfare, describing the claim as baseless and deceptive.

In a statement released on the 19th of January, 2026, the Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, dismissed the report as untrue, accusing those behind it of deliberately spreading falsehoods capable of creating fear, eroding public confidence and threatening national security.

The Army clarified that at no point has there been any indication or discussion of mutiny among its ranks. Colonel Anele underscored that mutiny constitutes a serious violation of military law and is completely at odds with the discipline, loyalty and professionalism expected of Nigerian soldiers.

She reaffirmed that both officers and soldiers remain committed to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and loyal to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, stressing that the Army remains cohesive and disciplined.

The statement faulted the report for depending on anonymous and unverified sources circulated through unofficial platforms, noting that such claims lack credibility.

According to the Army, personnel are professionally trained to channel grievances through recognised internal mechanisms rather than through social media platforms or online blogs.

Addressing claims surrounding remuneration, the Army explained that salary adjustments tied to promotions represent only a portion of total earnings and should not be misrepresented as the full scope of military pay.

“Military remuneration comprises consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational allowances, field and hardship allowances, as well as other entitlements that vary by deployment, qualification and responsibilities,” the statement explained.

The Army further disclosed that it is actively collaborating with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government institutions to enhance the welfare of troops. These initiatives include periodic salary reviews, increased operational allowances, improved accommodation, better medical services and comprehensive insurance packages for personnel and their families.

It added that allowance-related concerns are routinely reviewed in line with approved government policies. The statement noted that the current Chief of Army Staff has commenced engagements with appropriate authorities to further address welfare challenges, with steady progress already being recorded.

Rejecting any suggestion of neglect, the Army stated that the Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, continues to provide sustained support aimed at strengthening the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces, especially amid prevailing security challenges.

The statement cautioned that depicting the Nigerian Army as unstable or undisciplined is reckless and detrimental to national security, urging the public to ignore the report and rely solely on official channels for accurate information about the military.
