Canada reached the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history after Stephen Eustaquio scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to seal a 1-0 victory over South Africa on Sunday.
The Round of 32 clash in Los Angeles appeared destined for extra time before Eustaquio’s late strike broke South Africa’s hearts in the 90+2nd minute.
After Jacob Shaffelburg’s cross was headed clear, the Porto midfielder brought the ball under control with his chest before firing a superb first-time effort into the bottom-left corner to hand Canada a famous victory.
The result sparked celebrations among many African football fans, while bringing an end to South Africa’s impressive World Cup campaign.
Canada controlled much of the encounter despite leaving Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies on the bench at kick-off as he continued his return from a hamstring injury.

The Canadians created several clear chances through Derek Cornelius, Moise Bombito and Tajon Buchanan, but South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams delivered an outstanding performance to keep his side in the contest.
South Africa threatened on the counterattack and defended resolutely, with defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi producing a vital goal-line clearance to deny Jonathan David midway through the second half.
Davies was introduced in the 75th minute and immediately added pace and creativity to Canada’s attack, creating opportunities for Jonathan David and Promise David, but Williams continued to frustrate the hosts.
Just when extra time seemed inevitable, Eustaquio produced the decisive moment, sending Canada’s bench and supporters into wild celebrations as the co-hosts secured a historic place in the last 16.
Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16 on July 4, while South Africa exit the tournament after reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.
