South Africa have secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Rwanda 3–0 in their final Group C qualifier at the Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday.
The result, combined with Nigeria’s 4–0 victory over Benin Republic, confirmed Bafana Bafana’s place at next year’s tournament.
Thalente Mbatha, Teboho Appollis, and Evidence Makgopa got the goals in a commanding display by Hugo Broos’ men, who finished top of Group C with 18 points.
South Africa made a dream start, taking the lead in the 6th minute when Mbatha fired a superb strike into the top corner from the edge of the box.
The hosts doubled their advantage in the 27th minute after Appollis latched onto Modiba’s cutback to score from close range, putting Bafana firmly in control before halftime.
Makgopa sealed the win in the 72nd minute, rising highest to head home from an Appollis corner to make it 3–0.
Rwanda offered little threat going forward, struggling to cope with South Africa’s pace and movement, while Appollis proved a constant menace down the left flank.

The victory marks South Africa’s first World Cup qualification since 2010, when they hosted the tournament.
Coach Hugo Broos praised his side’s discipline and focus after the game, describing the qualification as “a proud moment for South African football.”
With the win, Bafana Bafana join other African nations who have booked their place in the 2026 World Cup to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
