Two Schoolchildren Die in Rainfall Electrocution in Anambra

Two schoolchildren tragically lost their lives on Monday, October 13, 2025, after being electrocuted while seeking shelter from heavy rain in front of St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, Nnewichi, Nnewi North Local Government Area, Anambra State.

Reports indicate that the children had taken refuge in a roadside shop during the downpour when they came into contact with a metal object that had become electrified, resulting in their immediate deaths.

Other pupils and bystanders narrowly escaped unharmed. The identities of the victims have not yet been officially disclosed.

Their bodies were retrieved and taken to a nearby morgue.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances that led to the electrocution.

Attempts to reach the State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, for comment were unsuccessful.

This tragic occurrence comes days after another rain-related accident in Nnewi, where a woman was swept away by floodwaters in the Uruagu community.

Residents and community leaders are calling on the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and relevant authorities to inspect and maintain electrical installations, particularly in areas frequented by children, to prevent similar incidents during the rainy season.
