Carrick Steps in as Manchester United Interim Manager Amid Struggling Season

Manchester United have appointed Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the 2025/26 season.

The club confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, following the departure of Ruben Amorim earlier this month.

The 44-year-old former midfielder will take charge immediately.

Carrick previously served as caretaker manager in 2021 and brings both coaching experience and a deep understanding of the club’s culture.

He will be supported by a backroom team including Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion, while Darren Fletcher, who temporarily oversaw first-team duties, will continue focusing on youth development.

Carrick’s first major test in charge will be the Manchester derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford on January 17, 2026.

Manchester United currently sit seventh in the Premier League and have been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions this season.

During his playing career, Carrick won multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, and the UEFA Champions League.

His appointment marks a return to the club as it looks to stabilize results and strengthen its league campaign.
