The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has disowned a purported letter claiming it approved a $46 billion grant to Atufeg Empowerment and Development Centre and Amb. Engr. Atunde Femi Gabriel.
Dated August 13, 2026, the document purportedly carried the approval of CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso and described the funds as financing for national empowerment and development projects.
The apex bank, however, on Thursday, September 10, dismissed the document as fake.
In a post on its official X account, the CBN shared an image of the letter stamped “Fake Content” and warned Nigerians against relying on it.
“This content is fake. Let the public be guided,” the bank stated.

The incident comes amid increasing attempts to use forged government documents to create false impressions of official backing.
Earlier this year, the Federal Government uncovered the activities of Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, who allegedly operated a fictitious Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council using forged government documents.
Authorities alleged that documents linked to the fictitious body were used to open bank accounts, including one with the CBN, although no government funds were paid into it.
The separate cases highlight the risks posed by fabricated official documents designed to appear authentic.
The CBN has urged the public to verify purported approvals and financial offers through its official channels before taking action.
