Family, friends, colleagues and fans on Wednesday gathered in Lagos to honour the memory of late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo during a solemn Service of Songs held ahead of his burial.
The memorial event, which took place at The Monarch Event Centre in Lekki, drew some of the biggest names in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, with tributes pouring in for the actor whose death last month shocked Nollywood and his admirers across the world.
Social media platforms were flooded with images and videos from the ceremony, showing a candle-lit venue decorated in white, as guests celebrated the life and legacy of the actor.
Entertainment platform BellaNaija shared moments from the event, writing, “Today, we join family, friends, and loved ones in celebrating the life of Alexx Ekubo. May the memories shared and love remembered continue to live on.”
Among those reacting online was actress Annie Macaulay, who posted an emotional message praying that God would remember the late actor “in His book of life.”
Alexx Ekubo died on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40 after battling advanced metastatic kidney cancer, according to statements released by his family.
His death sparked widespread mourning within Nollywood, where he was regarded as one of the industry’s most charismatic and bankable stars.
The actor had largely kept his health struggles away from public attention, making news of his passing even more devastating to fans and colleagues.
Tributes immediately poured in from actors, filmmakers, producers and admirers who described him as talented, warm-hearted and deeply loved.
Born Alex Ekubo-Okwaraeke on April 10, 1986, the actor rose to prominence after emerging first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition before transitioning fully into acting.
Although he studied Law at the University of Calabar, Ekubo chose a career in entertainment and quickly became one of Nollywood’s most recognizable faces.
His acting career began with a minor role in Sinners in the House in 2003 before he went on to feature in numerous successful productions.
Over the years, he starred in acclaimed films including Weekend Getaway, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, A Sunday Affair, The Bling Lagosians and Power of 1.
Known for his charming screen presence, good looks and versatility, he built a reputation as one of Nollywood’s leading romantic actors and became a favourite among movie audiences.
Beyond acting, he was also recognised for humanitarian efforts and youth advocacy. In 2020, he was listed among the Most Influential People of African Descent under 40 for his contributions to entertainment and social development.

The Service of Songs held on Wednesday marked the beginning of the final funeral rites announced by the Ekubo-Okwaraeke family.
According to the burial programme, a wake-keep will hold on June 17 at the family residence in Arochukwu, Abia State, while the funeral service and interment are scheduled for June 18.
Guests attending the ceremonies have been requested to wear white as a symbol of celebration of life.
In announcing the funeral arrangements, the family described Ekubo as a man whose life was marked by love, generosity, laughter and unwavering devotion to God and those around him.
They also thanked fans, friends and colleagues for the overwhelming support received since his passing.
For many in Nollywood, Alexx Ekubo’s passing represents the loss of a gifted actor who helped shape contemporary Nigerian cinema.
From romantic comedies to drama productions, his performances entertained millions and earned him admiration both within and outside Nigeria.
As candles flickered and tributes echoed through the venue in Lagos on Wednesday, friends and colleagues reflected not only on the actor’s achievements but also on the joy, humour and kindness they say he brought into their lives.
