Charly Boy Reacts to Buhari’s Death: ‘One Down, Many to Go’

…says karma catching up with Nigeria’s ‘ruiners’

Veteran entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy or AreaFada, has reacted to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He described the late leader’s passing as the beginning of karma catching up with those he called the “ruiners” of Nigeria.

Charly Boy, in a post shared on his X handle on Monday, expressed emotions over the former president’s death, describing it as symbolic of the kind of failed leadership that has burdened Nigeria for decades—dying in comfort abroad, far removed from the suffering of the people he once led.

“One down, many to go,” he began, referencing what he described as a history of jubilation whenever authoritarian leaders fall.

Drawing a comparison to the demise of former military dictator General Sani Abacha, Charly Boy recalled the widespread celebrations that followed, suggesting that similar sentiments surround Buhari’s death.

“I remember when Abacha died, there was dancing in the streets,” he wrote. “Anytime a tyrant dies, there is always jubilation. People are happy that their tormentor who almost looked invincible has kpaied.”

The singer and activist went on to accuse Nigerian leaders of abandoning the country’s failing institutions only to seek refuge in foreign countries when the consequences of their actions begin to surface.

“Some of the ruiners of Nigeria run to foreign land to die. Not in the hospitals they left to rot. Not among the people they claimed to serve. But in the comfort of a foreign land far from the chaos they created,” he added.

Charly Boy’s statement reflected deep resentment towards a system where past leaders, according to him, enrich themselves, neglect public services, and eventually distance themselves from the harsh realities facing everyday Nigerians.

“You see life? It has receipts. This is how they will be leaving one by one. The wicked, the heartless, the greedy who sold a nation and thought they’d escape judgment.”

He concluded his post with a defiant message to current and former power holders, warning that while citizens may seem silent, the consequences of past misdeeds will not go unanswered.

“Let them fly to London, but you can’t fly from truth. Let this be a warning to the rest of them: The people may be quiet, but karma is not sleeping. We the citizens of Nigeria have the last word.”

Charly Boy’s remarks sparked mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians echoing his sentiments, expressing frustration over years of poor leadership and socio-economic hardship.

Others viewed his comments as insensitive, urging more respectful discourse in moments of national loss.

Muhammadu Buhari, a retired general and former military ruler who later returned to office as a democratically elected president in 2015, passed away on Sunday in a London hospital after a prolonged illness. His death has prompted a wave of tributes and criticisms, reflecting the divided legacy he leaves behind.

While many remember him for spearheading anti-corruption efforts and advocating discipline, critics point to widespread insecurity, economic instability, and increasing poverty under his administration.

Charly Boy, known for his unfiltered social commentary and activism, has consistently criticised successive Nigerian governments. With his latest post, he continues to challenge the political elite, holding them accountable in the court of public opinion.
