Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, the Nigerian-American shot put star and two-time African champion, began his 2026 season with a strong performance at the Orlen Cup in Łódź, Poland, on Thursday, January 29.
Enekwechi recorded a season-best throw of 20.82 meters to secure first place in the men’s shot put competition.
He outperformed Romania’s Andrei Toader, who threw 20.55 meters for second place, and Serbia’s Armin Sinančević, who finished third with 19.93 meters.
The victory underscores Enekwechi’s technical skill and consistency on the global stage.
Enekwechi’s rise has been steady and historic. In July 2025, he became the first African shot putter to surpass 22 meters, achieving a 22.10-meter throw at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon.
That record-breaking performance established him as one of the top competitors in the world and reinforced his reputation as Nigeria’s leading shot put athlete.

Born in the United States to Nigerian parents, Enekwechi has represented Nigeria internationally since 2017.
He has won multiple African championships and secured top finishes at global competitions, including a top-five placing at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
With the Orlen Cup win marking the start of his 2026 campaign, Enekwechi is expected to continue competing in international meets, aiming to challenge the world’s best and further elevate Nigeria’s presence in track and field.
