CJN Warns Against Sweeping Attacks On Judges, Upholds Judicial Integrity

Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Kudirat Kekere‑Ekun, has defended the judiciary against broad, unsubstantiated corruption claims, warning that such attacks undermine public trust and threaten the rule of law.

Speaking on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at the swearing-in of 14 new Federal High Court judges in Abuja, Kekere‑Ekun said constructive criticism is valid in a democracy but blanket denunciations “wound deeply” and unfairly cast doubt on judges who have served with integrity.

She stressed that allegations of misconduct must be specific, evidence-based, and handled through proper channels, cautioning that unverified claims weaken confidence in the justice system.

The Chief Justice reassured that proven misconduct would be addressed firmly and transparently, with the National Judicial Council empowered to discipline erring judges.

Kekere‑Ekun’s remarks come amid rising scrutiny of judicial delays and controversial rulings in high-profile corruption trials.

She urged new judges to uphold their constitutional duties above outside pressures, insisting their conduct “must speak with clarity” while protecting judicial independence.
