A fresh wave of uncertainty has hit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following conflicting interpretations of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the party’s National Secretary position. While the apex court on Friday reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the PDP leadership has issued a statement affirming Rt. Hon. SKE Udeh Okoye as the substantive occupant of the role, leaving party members and political observers in confusion.
Supreme Court Restores Anyanwu as PDP National Secretary
The Supreme Court, in a judgment delivered by a five-member panel led by Justice Jamilu Tukur, set aside earlier decisions by the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court, which had ruled against Anyanwu. The court held that the matter was an internal affair of the PDP and, therefore, not subject to judicial intervention.
In its ruling, the court emphasized that the plaintiff, Aniagu Emmanuel, lacked the legal standing to challenge Anyanwu’s position, as he failed to demonstrate how he was personally affected by it. The judgment effectively reinstates Anyanwu as the rightful National Secretary of the PDP.
PDP Leadership Declares Udeh Okoye as National Secretary
However, in a surprising twist, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) responded to the ruling with a press statement asserting that the Supreme Court’s decision reaffirmed the party’s internal mechanisms, thereby validating Udeh Okoye as the legitimate National Secretary.
According to the PDP, Anyanwu had vacated the position upon becoming the party’s governorship candidate in the Imo State election in 2023. The statement detailed how the South East Zonal Executive Committee had nominated Udeh Okoye, and the NWC ratified his appointment in November 2023.

The PDP insists that Udeh Okoye remains the recognized National Secretary, having been endorsed by the party’s Board of Trustees, the PDP Governors’ Forum, and officially communicated to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The party further commended the Supreme Court for reinforcing party supremacy in determining its leadership.
What Next for the PDP?
The conflicting interpretations of the Supreme Court judgment have thrown the PDP into fresh turmoil, as two individuals now lay claim to the same position. While the legal ruling appears to favor Anyanwu’s reinstatement, the party’s leadership remains firm in its decision to uphold Udeh Okoye.
This latest crisis adds to the internal struggles within the PDP, raising questions about whether the party will resolve the leadership dispute internally or if the matter will spiral into further legal and political battles. As party members and stakeholders seek clarity, all eyes remain on the next steps from both factions.
