Court denies Emefiele’s travel request for medical treatment abroad

In a recent development at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama, former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele faced a setback as his application to travel to the United Kingdom for medical reasons was rejected.

Presiding Judge Hamza Muazu delivered the ruling on Tuesday, emphasizing that Emefiele had not provided sufficient evidence to justify the necessity of his trip abroad.

Emefiele, currently embroiled in multiple legal proceedings involving allegations of fraud and abuse of office across three different courts, had cited a purported medical invitation from the UK.

However, Judge Muazu noted that Emefiele failed to present a copy of this invitation during the court proceedings.

Furthermore, the judge highlighted concerns about Emefiele’s failure to demonstrate that his medical condition could not be adequately treated within Nigeria.

The court’s decision stemmed from an application filed by Emefiele’s counsel, Abdulakeem Labi-Lawal, requesting the release of his client’s passport to facilitate the medical trip.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), opposing the application, argued that granting Emefiele permission to travel could pose a risk of flight, potentially leading to him evading legal accountability.

This ruling underscores the ongoing legal challenges faced by Emefiele, whose attempts to secure permission for medical travel abroad amidst criminal charges have been met with judicial scrutiny.

As the case unfolds, stakeholders await further developments in the legal proceedings against the former CBN governor.
