Senator Agom Jarigbe, representing Cross River North Senatorial District, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing deep divisions within his former party.
Jarigbe formally notified the Senate of his defection in a letter read by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin during proceedings on Tuesday.
He explained that persistent factionalism and irreconcilable differences within the PDP at both national and state levels made it impossible for him to continue under its platform.
“I rise to formally notify you and the distinguished leadership of the Senate of my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party… The decision has been taken after a deep and thoughtful reflection on the current state of my former party,” Jarigbe said.
The senator stated that joining the APC would provide a more stable and progressive platform to serve his constituents effectively.
“I believe that the APC, under the leadership of our President, His Excellency Bola Tinubu, and your own steady leadership of the National Assembly, provides the stable and progressive platform necessary to effectively deliver on the mandate and democratic dividends expected by the people of Cross River North,” he added.
Senate members welcomed Jarigbe into the ruling party, with Jibrin saying, “You are most welcome. Please welcome him,” as lawmakers applauded.

Jarigbe’s defection comes amid ongoing turmoil within the PDP, which is currently split into two factions following a leadership struggle in the National Working Committee.
The crisis escalated after a Federal High Court in Abuja suspended the party’s national convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The dispute primarily pits supporters of Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum against allies of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, further deepening divisions within the opposition party.
Jarigbe’s move strengthens the APC’s position in the Senate and signals continued challenges for the PDP as it approaches the 2027 general elections.
