Customs Gives December 2025 Deadline to Switch to AEO Programme

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has set December 31, 2025, as the final date for all import and export operators to transition from the existing Fast Track Scheme to the globally recognised Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) Programme.

In a statement released on Friday, the National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Abdullahi Maiwada, described the transition as a key step in aligning Nigeria’s trade processes with international standards. He said the move is in line with the World Customs Organisation’s SAFE Framework and backed by legal provisions in the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.

According to Maiwada, the AEO Programme is a structured system that rewards compliant and financially sound traders with preferential treatment such as pre-arrival clearance, reduced inspections, quicker cargo release, and possible mutual recognition with customs authorities of other countries.

“This strategic initiative will officially replace the Fast Track Scheme by the end of 2025. Companies currently benefitting from the Fast Track must now begin their migration to the AEO Compliance Programme through the official application portal,” Maiwada stated.

He noted that only firms certified under the new programme would continue to receive facilitation benefits beyond the deadline.

To aid the transition, the Customs Service plans to host a stakeholders’ engagement forum. The forum will educate importers, exporters, terminal operators, and licensed customs agents on the AEO’s objectives, benefits, and application requirements.

Maiwada emphasized the service’s commitment to fostering trust, transparency, and cargo security within Nigeria’s trading environment, adding that the adoption of the AEO framework would boost Nigeria’s global trade ranking and streamline its cargo clearance processes.

He encouraged all eligible businesses to embrace the shift, describing the programme as a vital tool for securing competitive advantage and strengthening legitimate trade practices.
