President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerian digital influencers to deploy their platforms as tools for national unity and progress, not division, while stressing the need for fact-checking before amplifying information.
The President made this call on Friday during the opening of the Progressives Digital Media Summit in Abuja, themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development.”
Speaking to young Nigerians in the digital space, President Tinubu commended their innovation and resilience but cautioned against the dangers of misinformation and divisive narratives.
“Your generation has recognised this moment. You are using digital tools to innovate, educate, and demand accountability. But as your influence grows, so must our collective sense of purpose and responsibility,” Tinubu said.
He urged practitioners to prioritize content that uplifts the nation:
“Build businesses that employ others. Create content that unites. Use your influence to foster unity, not division,” the President added.
Tinubu highlighted the critical role of digital media as a driver of economic growth, civic engagement, and social change:
“Digital media is no longer an accessory to life; it is now central to economic and social transformation. You are not waiting for the future—you are building it,” he declared.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s support for digital innovation through the National Digital Innovation Fund and policies aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s startup ecosystem. However, he warned of the growing threat of disinformation, deepfakes, and cyber insecurity.
Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, described the practitioners as “the vanguard of a reborn Nigeria”, noting that the digital space is shaping the country’s global image.
Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stressed that social media is now a political battleground and a breeding ground for misinformation:
“Deepfakes and AI-generated content are increasingly used against political opponents. Posts are driven by clicks, not truth or accuracy.
Misinformation spreads five times faster than official corrections,” Onanuga warned, urging influencers to uphold integrity.
Summit convener Segun Dada, Special Assistant to the President on New Media, emphasized that digital media has evolved into a powerful force that must be harnessed responsibly to safeguard social cohesion and national security.
The event featured discussions on combating fake news, ethical content creation, and leveraging digital tools for economic empowerment and social progress.
