A potential public health catastrophe has been averted by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at Area Two Command, Onne Port in Rivers State, with the interception of millions of tablets and syrups of counterfeit cancerous drugs.
The discovery, involving various brands of these critical medications, was recently made by eagle-eyed officers of the Command.
Comptroller Mohammed Babandede, the Area Two Comptroller, expressed grave concern over the recurring attempts to import fake and potentially harmful drugs into the country while displaying the seized consignments at the federal government warehouse in Onne.
He detailed the nature of the intercepted drugs and other contraband goods, highlighting the significant risk they posed to public health.
Speaking on the potential health ramifications of these illicit medications, Comptroller Babandede emphasized that had it not been for the vigilance of the Customs officers and collaboration with other sister security agencies, these counterfeit cancer drugs would likely have made their way into the market for sale and consumption, with potentially devastating consequences for unsuspecting patients.

While the specific brands and quantities of the intercepted drugs were not immediately disclosed in detail, the Comptroller stressed that the sheer volume, numbering in the millions of tablets and syrups, indicated a large-scale operation aimed at profiting from the desperation of individuals battling cancer.
The importation of such fake medications not only defrauds patients but also poses serious health risks due to the lack of active ingredients or the presence of harmful substances.
The Nigeria Customs Service has reiterated its commitment to remain vigilant and proactive in its efforts to prevent the entry of such dangerous goods into the country, thereby safeguarding public health and safety.
Further investigations are likely underway to determine the origin of these counterfeit cancer drugs and to apprehend those involved in their importation.
