Manchester United’s Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth, has left the club after just five months in the role.
The announcement, made on Sunday, comes after a challenging period for the club both on and off the pitch.
Ashworth, who took over the position on July 1, 2024, oversaw a summer transfer window that saw the Red Devils spend over £200 million, according to Sky Sports.
However, his tenure was short-lived, with the club confirming his exit via an official statement.
“Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement.
We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during this transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future,” the statement read.
Ashworth’s departure follows United’s 3-2 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, a result that left the club in 13th place in the Premier League.
The loss marked manager Ruben Amorim’s second consecutive league defeat since taking over from Erik ten Hag.
Amorim was appointed by Ashworth and Chief Executive Omar Berrada after United’s disappointing start to the season under Ten Hag, which included a 2-1 loss to West Ham that left the team languishing in 14th place.
Despite being praised as “one of the best sporting directors in the world” by United’s minority owner, Jim Ratcliffe, Ashworth’s tenure failed to deliver the desired turnaround.
Under Amorim, United have had a mixed run of form, winning two, drawing one, and losing two of their last five matches.
With Manchester United now seeking a new Sporting Director, the club faces critical decisions to stabilize their season.
