Davido Defends Speaking Out On Insecurity

Afrobeats superstar Davido has reiterated his stance on Nigeria’s worsening security challenges, urging citizens not to remain silent in the face of insecurity and condemning attempts to discourage public advocacy on the issue.

The singer made the remarks in a post shared via his X account on Wednesday, amid ongoing reactions to his recent decision to spotlight the plight of abducted schoolchildren and teachers during the 2026 FIFA World Cup countdown concert.

In the post, Davido argued that patriotism requires Nigerians to speak openly about issues affecting the country rather than allowing political considerations to overshadow the truth.

“Damn it, every Nigerian should not stay silent about the insecurity plaguing the nation, nor should they prevent others from voicing their concerns openly,” he wrote.

The award-winning artiste further criticised what he described as bias and the tendency of some individuals to place personal or political interests above the collective good.

“Showing bias and prioritizing personal or political interests, and putting personal desires above the community’s goals, is nothing to be proud of,” he stated.

Davido also called on Nigerians to demonstrate genuine patriotism by confronting national challenges honestly and responsibly.

“Be a patriot for your country, stop prioritizing politics over the truth, and fear God in everything you do,” he added.

The singer’s latest comments come amid an ongoing public dispute with former presidential aide Reno Omokri over the use of international platforms to draw attention to Nigeria’s security crisis.

The controversy began after Davido appeared at the FIFA World Cup countdown concert wearing a customised jacket bearing the names of abducted pupils and teachers from Oyo State, alongside the inscription, “Bring Them Home.”

The gesture drew widespread praise from supporters and civil society advocates, including 2027 presidential candidate Peter Obi, who commended the singer for using his global platform to spotlight insecurity and advocate for the safe return of victims.

However, Omokri criticised the move, arguing that publicising terrorism and kidnapping incidents on an international stage could inadvertently amplify the activities of criminal groups and aid their objectives.

The disagreement escalated after Davido responded to Omokri’s criticism on social media, triggering a broader debate about the role of celebrities in advocacy and national discourse.

Since then, the singer has remained vocal in defending his decision, insisting that drawing attention to the plight of victims of insecurity is a civic responsibility rather than a political act.

His latest statement has generated fresh reactions online, with many supporters backing his call for greater public engagement on issues of national security, while others continue to debate the effectiveness of such advocacy on international platforms.

The exchange has once again placed the issue of insecurity at the centre of public conversation, highlighting growing concerns over kidnappings, banditry and violent attacks affecting communities across Nigeria.
