A chieftain of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, Magaji Mato, SAN, has said the party is not worried about meeting Electoral Act requirements should its presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, decide to defect to another political platform.
He said both the NNPP leadership and members within Kwankwaso’s political circle are monitoring developments closely as speculation grows over a possible exit from the party.
Mato spoke on Arise News on Tuesday, the 24th of March, 2026, morning while responding to questions about whether Kwankwaso could run into legal issues under the Electoral Act 2026 if he leaves the NNPP, where he has already completed electronic registration, to join another party. Such a move could result in his name appearing on more than one party register.
He said processes are already in place to manage any such transition.
“What will be done is clear. As soon as he defects to any political party, maybe any other political party, as the case may be, he will definitely resign his position within the space as allowed by the new Electoral Act, and then register his name in the new political party,” Mato said.

He added that the party is actively working on the matter and staying alert to ensure compliance with electoral rules.
“We are working on that. We are not really sleeping, even though they have put us on our toes. But we are not sleeping.
“We will make sure that we are equal to the task and will meet up with all the deadlines and ensure that the right thing is done so that people will freely choose who their leaders will become in 2027.”
