The Delta State House of Assembly has endorsed a proposed constitutional amendment to enable the establishment of state police, with all 23 lawmakers present voting in favour on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
Speaker Emomotimi Guwor, who presided over the plenary, said decentralised policing could improve intelligence gathering, strengthen responses to local security threats and protect lives and property. He directed the Clerk of the Assembly to forward the resolution to the National Assembly for further action.

The vote follows the Senate’s approval of the proposal on June 24 and the House of Representatives’ passage on July 23. The National Assembly transmitted the amendment to state legislatures on September 16 for consideration.
Edo, Osun, Oyo, Rivers and Zamfara had also approved the proposal before Delta’s vote.
Under Section 9(2) of the 1999 Constitution, at least 24 of Nigeria’s 36 state assemblies must approve a constitutional amendment before it can be presented to the President for assent. Delta’s endorsement does not, by itself, establish a state police force.
