The Delta State Police Command has arrested a popular content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over the alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman who later died while receiving treatment in hospital.
The command confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Wednesday by its spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, saying the suspect is assisting investigators as efforts continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the police, the 40-year-old suspect allegedly invited the victim from her location to Asaba, Delta State, under the guise of mentoring her in content creation.
Investigators alleged that after arriving in Asaba, the woman was lured to the suspect’s hotel room, where she was reportedly assaulted and raped.
Police said the victim later recorded a video in which she narrated her account of the alleged assault before ingesting a poisonous substance believed to be insecticide.
She was rushed to a medical facility for emergency treatment but later died despite efforts to save her life.
“The Delta State Police Command has arrested a popular content creator, one Ifeanyi Ogbonna, male, aged 40, also popularly known as ‘Odogwu of Asaba,’ in connection with the alleged rape of a 20-year-old girl.
The suspect invited the victim to Asaba in the guise of teaching her content creation, lured her to his hotel room, allegedly tortured and raped her.
The deceased, who could not withstand the trauma, made a video of her encounter, then took insecticide. She eventually died while receiving treatment,” the statement read.
The police said the suspect remains in custody while detectives continue gathering evidence, including reviewing the victim’s recorded statement and other material relevant to the investigation.
The command assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted and that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Authorities urged members of the public to remain calm and allow investigators to conclude their work, noting that further updates would be provided as the case progresses.
