Delta Police Enforce Yuletide Fireworks Ban to Strengthen Public Safety

The Delta State Police Command has reaffirmed its ban on the use and sale of fireworks as part of heightened security measures for the forthcoming Yuletide season. The command warned that the prohibition—covering pyrotechnics, firecrackers, “knockouts,” and “bangers”—remains fully in force and will be rigorously enforced across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, issued the directive in a statement released on Thursday through the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe. He explained that the annual clampdown is a crucial component of wider efforts to prevent crime during the festive period, stressing that criminals often exploit the sound of fireworks to mask illicit activities or create panic among residents.

“Parents and guardians are advised to caution their children and wards to desist from using these items,” the statement said. “Retailers are equally warned to withdraw from the sale of these products, as anyone found wanting will be arrested and prosecuted, and their goods impounded.”

To ensure effective enforcement, CP Abaniwonda ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, alongside Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders, to intensify surveillance and crackdown on violators in their jurisdictions.

The police chief also expressed appreciation for the cooperation of Delta residents, urging the public to report any sale or use of fireworks to the nearest police station or through the command’s dedicated control room lines.

The seasonal restrictions on pyrotechnics have become a recurring security strategy across Nigeria, as police formations nationwide move to curb the exploitation of fireworks for criminal purposes during the festive period.
