Desmond Elliott Questions Value Of Political Defections, Urges Focus On Service

The lawmaker representing Surulere Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliott, has expressed reservations about politicians switching political parties, arguing that such moves may not necessarily bring about the change Nigerians seek.

Speaking during an interview on The Morayo Show, Elliott reflected on leadership, governance and the current state of Nigerian politics, insisting that moving from one political camp to another is not always the solution.

According to him, his focus has remained on delivering results for his constituents rather than seeking political advantage through defections.

He cited improvements in electricity supply and healthcare in Surulere as achievements recorded during his time in office.

“My own kind of politician, I don’t steal money. If you look at Surulere 10 years ago, it was a horrible place to live in, but now there’s electricity, healthcare and all,” he said.

The Nollywood actor-turned-politician also stressed that public office should not be viewed as a position of superiority, noting that leadership is temporary and should be approached with humility and a commitment to service.

Elliott warned that many politicians often forget that political power is fleeting and can disappear at any time.

Questioning the rationale behind frequent political defections, he said there may be little difference between the major political figures many politicians move between.

“I’m not sure. I ask myself, if I leave Asiwaju and I go to Obi, what is the difference between Asiwaju and Obi? If I leave Obi and I go to Atiku, what is the difference?” he asked.

His remarks come amid ongoing political realignments and defections across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
