Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has dissolved the board of Bayelsa United Football Club and ordered the dismissal of all players and members of the technical crew following the club’s relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The governor took the decision after the Yenagoa-based club failed to retain its top-flight status despite receiving substantial financial support from the state government throughout the season.
The dissolution, which takes immediate effect, is part of plans by the state government to embark on a comprehensive restructuring of the club ahead of its campaign in the Nigerian National League (NNL) next season.

A new management team is expected to be constituted in the coming days as authorities move to rebuild the club and position it for an immediate return to the NPFL.
Bayelsa United endured a disappointing 2025/2026 season, finishing second from bottom on the league table with 43 points from 38 matches. The club recorded 11 wins, 10 draws and 17 defeats during the campaign.
The relegation adds to the club’s turbulent history in the Nigerian top flight. Since its establishment in 2008, Bayelsa United has suffered relegation three times and secured promotion back to the elite division on two occasions.
The sweeping changes underscore the state government’s determination to revamp the club and restore its status among Nigeria’s top football teams.
