DSS arrests man in Port Harcourt after social-media call for military rule

The Department of State Services (DSS) has detained 29-year-old Innocent Chukwuma after he allegedly used his social-media account to urge a military takeover in Nigeria, a security expert said on Wednesday.

Zagazola Makama, a widely followed security analyst, disclosed the arrest on his official X account, saying operatives tracked the suspect to Oyigbo in Rivers State where he was taken into custody. Makama identified the user’s handle as @TheAgroman.

According to screenshots of the post cited by the analyst, Chukwuma wrote that “a coup in Nigeria is needed,” and called for the removal of the ruling All Progressives Congress, suspension of the civilian government and public backing for the armed forces. The post continued: “It will happen eventually. Nigerians, the military needs your support now! Only them can save this country. Only the military can reset this country. Support them.”

Makama told reporters a source close to the matter confirmed the suspect is cooperating with DSS investigators. No further details about charges or the progress of the probe were provided.

The arrest highlights growing scrutiny of incendiary calls to violence on social platforms and the attention security agencies are paying to online activity that threatens democratic institutions.

The DSS has not released an official statement on the matter at the time of this report.
