Operatives of the Department of State Services on Wednesday took former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, into custody shortly after proceedings at the Federal High Court in Kaduna.
El-Rufai, who is facing trial over alleged corruption, had just concluded a hearing on his bail application filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) when DSS operatives moved in and escorted him into a waiting vehicle. He was reportedly taken to Abuja.
The development followed a heavy security presence around the court premises before the hearing, with multiple DSS vehicles strategically positioned, fueling speculation that the former governor might be detained after proceedings.
El-Rufai arrived at the court around 9:05 a.m. in a Hilux van, drawing attention from security personnel and observers.
Movement within the court premises was tightly controlled, with armed operatives restricting access, including to journalists.
Speaking after the hearing, lead defence counsel, Oluwole Iyamu (SAN), confirmed that the court had reserved ruling on the bail application until April 14.

“The bail application was argued and responded to, and the ruling has been fixed for April 14. We look forward to that day and remain hopeful,” Iyamu said, expressing confidence in the judicial process.
He also disclosed that the defence team is preparing for another case involving the DSS, scheduled for April 10 at the Federal High Court in Abuja, describing it as a separate legal matter.
Wednesday’s proceedings followed earlier legal tensions on Tuesday, when arguments over a motion requesting the presiding judge, Rilwan M Aikawa, to recuse himself briefly stalled the case before the application was withdrawn.
El-Rufai is also facing separate charges at the Kaduna State High Court in Kawo, where he was arraigned alongside Amadu Sule on allegations including abuse of office, fraud, and conferring undue advantage.
The unfolding legal battle continues to draw national attention, with observers closely watching developments as the courts consider both the bail application and the substantive charges.
