Ebonyi Govt Frees 25 Inmates, Boosts Rehabilitation Drive

The Ebonyi State Government has facilitated the release of 25 inmates as part of ongoing efforts to decongest correctional facilities and strengthen the state’s justice delivery system.

The initiative, which took place on Monday in Abakaliki, was spearheaded by the Wife of the Governor, Mrs Uzoamaka Nwifuru, in collaboration with her Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and Internally Displaced Persons project and the state Ministry of Justice.

Speaking at the event, Mrs Nwifuru described the release as “deeply emotional and meaningful,” emphasizing that no life is beyond redemption. She said the initiative aimed to empower inmates with the tools to reintegrate into society and live productive lives.

“Behind the walls of correctional facilities are men and women who, despite their past mistakes, still carry dreams, skills, and the desire to live meaningful and productive lives. Today, 25 of such individuals are stepping out not just into freedom, but into hope, responsibility, and a new beginning,” she stated.

Mrs Nwifuru added that rehabilitation, rather than mere release, is essential for true correction.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Ben Odoh, commended the first lady’s effort, urging the released inmates to embrace their second chance. He noted that the custodian centre built for 387 inmates currently houses 1,018 persons, while the two prison centres in Abakaliki and Afikpo accommodate a total of 1,205 inmates.

Controller of the Correctional Centre, Mr Chika Igwugwu, also thanked Mrs Nwifuru for the initiative and encouraged her to continue supporting prison reforms and inmate rehabilitation.
