Edo PDP: No Ibadan Convention, Turaki’s Chairmanship, Expulsions Invalid

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed claims that a new national chairman emerged from a purported convention held in Ibadan on November 16, 2025, describing the event and related expulsions as fake and illegal.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, December 3, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Bob-Manuel Umoru, said the PDP had not conducted any legally recognised national convention as required by its constitution.

“Our attention has been drawn to a misleading press release circulating in the media claiming that a new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has emerged from a purported convention held in Ibadan on November 16, 2025, and that certain members including the Honourable Minister of the FCT, H.E. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike have been issued expulsion certificates,” Umoru said.

“For the sake of clarity, legality, and the integrity of our great party, the following must be stated categorically: No National Convention Was Held by the PDP.

“Therefore, no individual can legitimately claim to have emerged as National Chairman or holder of any national office from a convention that did not occur. The alleged convention in Ibadan is a fabrication with no basis in reality or party procedure.”

Umoru explained that two existing court judgments still restrain the conduct of any national convention until pending legal cases are concluded.

“These judgments have not been vacated by any superior court. Any action taken in defiance of these valid court orders, including the supposed handover ceremony and claims of new leadership, is null, void, and of no effect whatsoever,” he said.

Responding to the issued expulsion certificates allegedly targeting the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and others, Umoru described the development as a “deliberate mockery of due process.”

“The so-called expulsion certificates represent a deliberate mockery of due process, a childish political drama, and at best a play under the moonlight.

“You cannot expel party members from a convention that never took place, under a leadership that is not recognized by law, using a process that violates both court orders and the PDP Constitution,” he stated.

He reaffirmed that the PDP remains a party founded on law, order, and discipline, stressing that rebuilding efforts must align with constitutional principles and respect court rulings.

“The PDP remains strong and resilient, but it must be protected from individuals attempting to impose illegal leadership structures and unconstitutional sanctions.

“Those who claim the party ‘will never die’ while violating its core principles are the real threat to its stability,” he said.

Umoru urged party members in Edo State and across Nigeria to disregard the misinformation, insisting that Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, is not the party’s national chairman.

“No PDP National Convention has been held. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, is not the National Chairman of the PDP. The purported expulsions are illegal, void, and unenforceable. The valid High Court orders remain in effect,” he said.

“We call on all genuine members of the Edo State Chapter of our great party, members across the Nation, and all over the world, wherever this will get to, kindly disregard this misinformation and remain steadfast in defending the Constitution and integrity of our great party,” the statement added.
