Edo Speaker, 17 LG Chairmen Dump PDP for APC in Mass Defection

In a major political shake-up ahead of the Edo State governorship election, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, 17 local government chairmen, dozens of councilors, and other key grassroots leaders have officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The wave of defections was formally sealed during a ceremony held in Benin City, where the new entrants were received by APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Bashiru; Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo; and other party chieftains.

Speaking at the event, Governor Okpebholo described the development as a strong sign of growing confidence in the APC’s vision and leadership.

“This defection is a clear message — Edo is ready for progress under the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu,” Okpebholo said. “We welcome these leaders with open arms. Their experience and influence at the grassroots will further strengthen our party.”

Agbebaku and the other defectors expressed their commitment to working with the APC to bring development and unity to Edo State. Political observers say the move could significantly alter the political dynamics ahead of the September 2025 governorship election.

The mass defection underscores rising discontent within the PDP in Edo State and boosts the APC’s momentum as it prepares to wrest power from the incumbent administration.
