The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested three individuals in Maiduguri, Borno State, over alleged mutilation of the Nigerian currency.
The anti-graft agency disclosed the arrests on Thursday via its official X (formerly Twitter) page, identifying the suspects as Adam Muhammad, Muhammad Muhammad and Bashir Musa.
According to the EFCC, the trio was apprehended after a viral video circulated on social media platforms showing them allegedly using a ₦500 note to clean nasal mucus.
The footage sparked public outrage and prompted swift action from authorities.
Following the video’s circulation, operatives from the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Commission traced and arrested the suspects within the Maiduguri metropolis.

The EFCC stated that the suspects are currently in custody at its Maiduguri detention facility while investigations continue.
Under Nigerian law, the abuse, defacement or mutilation of the national currency constitutes an offence punishable upon conviction.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to enforcing laws that protect the integrity of the Naira.
The suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
