EFCC Set to Arraign Ex‑AGF Malami, Son Over Multi-Billion Naira Assets Tuesday

Abubakar Malami, former Attorney‑General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, is scheduled to be arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, over alleged money‑laundering offences.

Malami will face the charges alongside his son, Abdulaziz Malami, and an associate, Bashir Asabe, before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The EFCC filed a 16‑count charge against the trio on December 24, 2025, accusing them of laundering funds and unlawfully acquiring properties valued at about N8.7 billion to N9 billion.

The charges allege that the defendants conspired to conceal and disguise the origins of illicit funds used to buy multiple luxury properties and assets across Abuja, Kano, Kebbi, and other locations.

The public announcement confirming the arraignment date was made on Monday, December 29, 2025, highlighting the EFCC’s plan to bring the former minister, his son, and associate to court on Tuesday.

Malami has been in EFCC custody since early December after the agency contested that he had not met all bail conditions set by the court, despite a bail order being granted by the Federal Capital Territory High Court.

His legal team maintains he has fulfilled the conditions and should be released.

Court documents show that some bank representatives and Bureau de Change operators have been lined up as prosecution witnesses, indicating the breadth of financial evidence the EFCC plans to present.

Malami’s lawyers have criticised his continued detention, alleging procedural irregularities and bias in the investigation, while the EFCC insists its actions are lawful and in pursuit of accountability.

The scheduled arraignment marks a significant development in a high‑profile case that has drawn national attention and underscores ongoing efforts to enforce anti‑corruption laws in Nigeria.
