Elumelu Recalls Early Days As Photocopier Salesman, Says Lessons Shaped Him

Nigerian businessman and Heirs Holdings Chairman, Tony Elumelu, has reflected on his early career after coming across an old business card from his days as a photocopier salesperson.

Elumelu shared an image of the card on X on Thursday, describing it as a reminder of his experience as a young sales representative and the lessons he gained during that period.

He said working in sales taught him valuable lessons in resilience, negotiation and determination, which he noted still influence his approach to business and customer relationships.

“Stumbled upon my old business card from my early days as a photocopier salesperson.

It brought back memories of being a young, hungry sales rep, learning the fundamentals of resilience, negotiation, and grit. Those lessons have stayed with me over the years and continue to shape how I approach business and engage with customers today,” he wrote.

According to the businessman, the old card also reinforced his belief that the habits and values developed early in life can influence a person’s future.

“It’s also a reminder that who you become tomorrow is often shaped by the foundation you lay today; the discipline, hard work, and consistency you put in when no one is watching,” he added.

Elumelu urged his followers to remain persistent in their personal and professional development.

“Keep showing up. Keep learning. Keep executing,” he said.

The card featured in his post listed Elumelu as a “Sales Executive” with Precissa Sales Limited and carried a Bode Thomas Street, Surulere, Lagos address alongside a telephone number.

Reflecting humorously on the outdated details, he noted that neither the contact number nor the address remained relevant.

“As for the phone number and address on the card? Long gone,” he wrote, followed by a laughing emoji.
