United Bank for Africa Plc has formally welcomed Emmanuel Nnorom as its new Group Chairman, following his assumption of office on August 21, 2026, after the retirement of Tony Elumelu.
The bank announced Nnorom’s arrival in the new role through a post on its social media platforms on Wednesday, describing him as an experienced business executive and chartered accountant with more than 40 years of professional experience.
Nnorom succeeded Elumelu, who stepped down after reaching the maximum tenure allowed for non-executive directors under the Central Bank of Nigeria’s corporate governance guidelines.
In its welcome message, UBA said, “We welcome Mr. Emmanuel N. Nnorom as the new Group Chairman of United Bank for Africa Plc.
A seasoned business leader and chartered accountant with over four decades of experience.”
The financial institution highlighted Nnorom’s extensive experience within the UBA Group, noting that he spent more than eight years in senior management roles.
His previous positions include Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa, Group Chief Operating Officer and Group Chief Financial Officer. He also served as a Non-Executive Director on the UBA board.
With his wealth of experience and understanding of UBA’s journey, Mr. Nnorom takes the helm at an important moment in the Group’s continued growth across Africa and beyond,” the bank stated.

UBA had previously disclosed Nnorom’s appointment as Elumelu’s successor, with the transition taking effect on August 21.
Nnorom joined UBA’s board as a Non-Executive Director in 2024 after holding several executive positions within the group.
His roles over the years included Group Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director (Group Executive Office), Executive Director (Finance), Executive Director (Risk), and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa.
As head of UBA Africa, he was responsible for overseeing the bank’s activities in several African markets and played a role in advancing the group’s pan-African expansion.
Before and outside his time at UBA, Nnorom held senior positions across Nigeria’s corporate and financial sectors. He was President and Chief Executive Officer of Transnational Corporation Plc from September 2014 to May 2017 and has served as Group Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings since June 2017.
His banking experience also spans Standard Trust Bank, now UBA, Diamond Bank, NUB International Bank and Liberty Merchant Bank, where he occupied various senior management positions.
Nnorom is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.
He also attended Templeton College, Oxford, where he completed executive programmes in leadership and management.
UBA said Nnorom’s appointment comes at a significant stage in the group’s ongoing expansion and growth across Africa and international markets.
