Chisom Umejiaku
The Emir of Zuru in Kebbi State, Major-General Muhammadu Sani Sami (rtd.), has died at the age of 81. He passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2025, in London after a brief illness.
Born on October 24, 1943, in Zuru, Sani Sami joined the Nigerian Army in December 1962 and was commissioned as an officer the following year after training in the United Kingdom. He rose through the ranks and served as Commander of the Brigade of Guards under General Murtala Mohammed. Following the military coup of December 1983, he was appointed military governor of Bauchi State, a position he held until August 1985. He retired from active service in 1990.
After retirement, he was installed as the Emir of Zuru, where he reigned for decades and became known for his discipline, humility, and commitment to preserving culture and promoting the welfare of his people.

Governor of Kebbi State, represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Garba Umar-Dutsinmari, described the Emir’s death as a great loss to the state and the nation. Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah also paid tribute, calling him a noble leader who served his people and Nigeria with distinction.
The late Emir is survived by four wives and seven children. Burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the Zuru Emirate Council.
