The Enugu State Police Command has restated its ban on the sale and unauthorised use of fireworks during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, warning that violators will be arrested and prosecuted.
Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa issued the warning in a statement released late Monday through the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe. He said the enforcement of the ban is aimed at safeguarding the public and preventing criminals from using fireworks to cause panic or perpetrate offences.
“We are reiterating that the sale, purchase and use of fireworks, commonly known as knockouts or bangers, remain banned across the state,” Giwa said.
He stressed that anyone found flouting the directive would “face the full weight of the law,” and urged parents and guardians to discourage their children from using fireworks during the yuletide. He added that operatives have been deployed to ensure strict compliance throughout the festive period.
The Commissioner also condemned the recent rise in bush burning during the harmattan season, describing it as dangerous and irresponsible.

“Bush burning at this time of year is not only reckless but poses serious risks of fire outbreaks that can endanger lives and destroy property. Offenders will be duly prosecuted,” he warned.
The Command appealed to residents to stay vigilant, cooperate with security agencies, and promptly report suspicious movements or individuals.
