EPL: Newcastle Confirms No Change In Head Coach Position

Newcastle United has confirmed that Eddie Howe will remain as head coach for the rest of the season despite recent struggles in the Premier League.

Chief Executive David Hopkinson told BBC Sport that the club is “not looking to make a change at the moment” and that discussions about Howe’s future are not ongoing.

The Magpies have had a difficult campaign, including a 7-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League and a 2-1 loss to Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby, leaving Newcastle 12th in the league.

Howe and his players were booed by supporters at St James’ Park following the derby defeat.

Hopkinson said the club is preparing for the summer transfer window, planning for both European qualification and non-qualification.

He added that any players leaving Newcastle will do so on the club’s terms, referencing last year’s £125 million sale of Alexander Isak to Liverpool.

Despite setbacks, Newcastle remains behind Howe, who led the club to Champions League qualification in 2023 and 2025 and won the EFL Cup last season.

“I don’t have a stance on his future. What I can tell you is that the derby loss hurt.

We take it seriously. There’s nothing within us that thinks, ‘Well, it’s just three points and on we go’. It has resonated.

“I spent a couple of hours in a one-on-one lunch recently with Eddie, and we talked through a multitude of things, including that.

Eddie is our manager. I expect to have a great run to the end of the season here, and we will talk about the future when it’s time. Right now, we’re focused on this season’s competition,” he said.
