Ex-Commander Nicolas: Train, Equip Military Better to Tackle Plateau Insecurity

A former commander of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), Maj. Gen. Rogers Nicolas (Rtd), has urged the federal government to strengthen military training in order to effectively confront the security challenges in Plateau State.

Speaking on Wednesday, the 17th of September 2025, during an interview on Arise Television, Nicolas pointed out that the state’s landscape presents major obstacles for security operations.

He emphasized that proper evaluation of military operations should be done, with a focus on manpower and equipment, while also ensuring the provision of logistics and modern technology.

“Talking about war against insurgency, I stand to be corrected, I don’t think the federal government has declared any war against insurgency.

“If war was declared against insurgency, the instruments of national power will come to play. But here they are just allowing the military only to be carrying out the kinetic efforts.

The non-kinetic part of it is slow and it’s not helping matters.

“Having said that, there’s a need to reassess the military in these operational areas in terms of equipment and their personnel because the landmass of some of these states are very large and the terrain is very difficult.

“So the military needs to be trained, equipped and provided with necessary logistics, including technology so that they will be able to do well in some of these places,” he stated.
