Benue State is mourning the loss of one of its prominent sons, Rtd Col. Joseph Akaagerger, a former military governor of Katsina State.
His death was officially announced in a statement released on the 20th of May, 2025, by the Chief Press Secretary to the Benue Governor, Mr Tersoo Kula.
According to the statement, the ex-military governor died on Thursday, 15th of May, at the age of 69 years.

Gov Hyacinth Alia expressed deep sadness over Akaagerger’s sudden death, highlighting the vacuum his passing has created in the state and beyond.
Alia described him as a patriotic Nigerian who gave the nation and Benue State his very best during his time.
Recalling his time in the Senate, Alia noted that as a lawmaker and Senator, the late Akaagerger equally proved his quality in politics, business, community service and philanthropy, offering prayers for his soul to find eternal peace.
