The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned the fatal shooting of a secondary school student by a police officer in Oyo State, calling it a gross abuse of power and demanding swift justice.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by Comrade Samson Ajasa Adeyemi, the association’s National Public Relations Officer, NANS expressed outrage over the tragic incident, describing it as “a grave violation of the sanctity of human life.”
The student, who was reportedly on his way to sit for the ongoing West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exam, was killed by a stray bullet during a police chase of suspected cybercrime offenders in Ibadan. The shocking death has sparked public outcry and protests, with citizens demanding accountability from security agencies.
“Nigerian students across the country are devastated by this senseless loss. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family. No parent should have to mourn their child under such horrifying circumstances,” the statement read.
NANS has demanded an immediate, independent investigation into the incident, stressing that the responsible officer must be swiftly identified, apprehended, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
“Accountability is non-negotiable. Justice must not only be done, but seen to be done,” Adeyemi stated, emphasizing that the continued pattern of police brutality is unacceptable and must end.

The student body also urged the Oyo State Government, led by Governor Seyi Makinde, to take decisive action in the matter to ensure justice and prevent potential unrest.
“The state must not only investigate this tragedy thoroughly but also take active steps to compensate the affected family. While no amount can replace a lost life, it is a necessary gesture to acknowledge their grief and demand systemic reform,” the statement added.
NANS called for calm among students and the general public but vowed to maintain pressure on the authorities until justice is delivered.
“This is not just about one life lost — it is about ensuring that such a tragedy never happens again. Nigerian students will not relent until justice is served and reforms are implemented to protect all citizens,” the association concluded.
