Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending his long-standing ties with the party.
In a letter personally signed and addressed to the APC chairman of Banshika Ward in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Lawal said his resignation takes immediate effect.
“I write to notify you of my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with effect from today,” he stated in the letter dated June 29, 2025.
“I have already concluded arrangements to join my new party. I will make a public declaration of this in the coming days.”
He explained that the move is part of a larger plan to work with like-minded Nigerians to help build a better country.
“I intend to join other compatriots in working towards making Nigeria a better living place for all Nigerians,” Lawal added.

Though he did not disclose the party he is moving to, photos of the former SGF have recently surfaced online, showing him alongside several high-profile opposition figures.
Among them are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-governorship candidate Aishatu Dahiru Binani, and former Senators Ahmed Barata and Abdulazeez Nyako.
The group is believed to be part of a growing opposition coalition gearing up for the 2027 general elections.
While Lawal hasn’t confirmed any official role, his presence at recent gatherings has added to the speculation.
Lawal, who served under President Muhammadu Buhari during his first term, has in recent years been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the direction of the APC.
His resignation marks another notable exit as Nigeria’s political realignments ahead of 2027 begin to take shape.
