Family Breakdown Fuelling Nigeria’s Insecurity – Defence Chief

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has linked the surge in insecurity across Nigeria to the collapse of family values.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2025 ‘Exercise Haske Biyu’ held at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna, on Thursday, the 2nd of October, 2025, Musa stressed that restoring family values remains key to tackling the nation’s security crisis.

The annual military drill, which brought together Nigeria and partner countries, highlighted the importance of family values, civic responsibility and moral strength in addressing present-day security threats.

“The family is the bedrock of every community. Without the family, there can’t be a good community.

“What we have realised is that because the family system is failing, insecurity is growing, which means if we address the family issues, insecurity will go down,” he said.

General Musa further urged families to instil discipline, respect and love in children, stressing that these virtues are essential for raising citizens who will contribute positively to society.
