Fans across Nigeria and beyond are showering praise on 20-year-old Benjamin Fredrick following his exceptional performance in the Super Eagles’ 4-1 extra-time victory over Gabon in Thursday’s World Cup qualifiers playoffs.
Since making his first start for the Super Eagles in the Charity Cup, Fredrick has steadily won the hearts of Nigerians with his composure, confidence and maturity at the back. His showing against Gabon further cemented his rising reputation.
Former Super Eagles captain and ex-midfielder, Sunday Oliseh, joined the chorus of admiration, applauding Fredrick for what he described as a near-perfect performance in the high-stakes semi-final.
The Eagles had advanced to the playoffs as one of the best runners-up, buoyed by a dominant 4-0 win over Benin Republic where Victor Osimhen netted a hat-trick.
In Thursday’s clash, Akor Adams put Nigeria ahead before Gabon equalised late to force extra time.
The Eagles came alive in the added period, with Chidera Ejuke restoring the lead and Osimhen bagging two more goals to seal a convincing 4-1 win.
Fredrick, paired with Calvin Bassey in central defence, delivered a calm and assured performance that kept Gabon’s attackers at bay throughout the extended match.
In a post on X, Oliseh described the youngster as the “most influential player” for the Super Eagles on the night, praising his positioning, pace, decisiveness and simple but intelligent style of play.
“I personally found Benjamin Fredrick to be the most influential player yesterday versus Gabon. Always well positioned, pacy, decisive and played simply,” Oliseh wrote, adding cheekily: “Boy it feels great in the morning when Naija do well sha! Abi I lie?”

Nigeria will now face DR Congo on November 16 for a place in the inter-continental playoff that could seal their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Fredrick’s rise has been remarkable. The Kaduna-born defender began his journey at Simoiben Academy before spells at ABS FC and Nasarawa United.
In 2023, he moved to Brentford FC and was later loaned to Belgian side K.F.C. Dender E.H. to gain experience.
Capable of playing as a centre-back, right-back, or defensive midfielder, Fredrick made the step up to the senior national team in May 2025 after impressive outings at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
With performances like Thursday’s, many fans believe the Super Eagles have found a defensive pillar for years to come.
