The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has rescued two babies who were abandoned in separate incidents in Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of Abuja.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying both incidents occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
According to Adeh, the first case was recorded in Kurudu after a resident, identified as Innocent, heard a baby crying around Obodo Street at about 5:30pm.
“On Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at about 5:45 PM, a resident of Kurudu, identified as Innocent, reported at the Kurudu Police Station that at about 5:30 PM on the same date, while around Obodo Street, Kurudu, he heard the cry of a baby. Upon inspection, he discovered a baby carefully wrapped in a cloth and abandoned in a carton box.
Upon receipt of the report, Police officers from Kurudu Division alongside officers from the Juveniles and Women Care Department of the Division were promptly dispatched to the scene, where a baby boy was found and rescued. The baby was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and is currently in a stable condition, while efforts are being intensified to unravel the circumstances surrounding the abandonment, ” the statement partly read.

Adeh said a second case was reported later that night in Gwagwalada, where another resident, Ibrahim, discovered a baby girl crying outside his gate at about 9:40pm.
With the assistance of other community members, Ibrahim rescued the child and subsequently reported the incident at the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15pm.
The police said officers from the Juveniles and Women Care Department took the baby girl to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination. She is currently receiving care pending her transfer to the Social Welfare Development for further assistance.
Adeh added that the Command was working to establish how the two babies were abandoned and identify their mothers or other relatives.
She praised Innocent, Ibrahim and the other residents who responded to the incidents for their quick action and for promptly involving the police.
The police spokesperson appealed to anyone with useful information about the identities or relatives of the babies to report to the nearest police station or contact the Command’s Public Relations Officer.
