Ferrari’s First EV Fetches Record $40m

Ferrari’s first fully electric production car has sold for $40 million at a charity auction in California, setting a record for the most expensive new car ever sold at auction.

The one-off Luce “Chassis 0” was auctioned by RM Sotheby’s during Monterey Car Week. It had carried a pre-sale estimate of more than $1.1 million.

Ferrari said proceeds will support educational initiatives through The Ferrari Foundation. The car was specially configured by the company’s Tailor Made division and design centre as the first production chassis of the Luce programme.

The sale surpassed the previous record of $26 million, set in 2025 by a specially commissioned Ferrari Daytona SP3 at Monterey.

Ferrari unveiled the Luce in May 2026 with a starting price of €550,000. Developed with design input from LoveFrom, founded by former Apple design chief Sir Jony Ive, the model marks Ferrari’s entry into fully electric production vehicles.

The Luce’s unconventional styling drew criticism from some enthusiasts, but Ferrari has reported strong customer demand.

The record sale gives Ferrari’s shift to electric power a landmark moment while underscoring the extraordinary premium attached to rare, historically significant Ferraris.

The marque has previously linked major car sales to charitable causes. In 2016, the final LaFerrari fetched $7 million at auction, with proceeds donated to earthquake relief efforts in central Italy.
