FG Clarifies 12-Year Education Proposal, Says JSS, SSS Remain

The Federal Government has proposed a 12-year uninterrupted basic education model but has refuted claims that it has scrapped Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS).

In a statement released on Friday, the Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folashade Boriowo, clarified that the proposal, presented by Minister of Education Tunji Alausa at the Extraordinary National Council on Education (NCE) Meeting in Abuja, is still under discussion and not an immediate policy change.

“The attention of the Federal Ministry of Education has been drawn to misleading reports suggesting that the Federal Government has scrapped Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) and replaced them with a new 12-year uninterrupted basic education model. We wish to categorically state that this is not true,” the statement read.

According to the ministry, the proposal aims to retain the current 6-3-3 structure but eliminate barriers between JSS and SSS to ensure a seamless transition of students without external examinations at that stage.

The ministry emphasized that the proposal remains subject to consultations and deliberations with stakeholders.

“The final decision on whether to adopt this reform will be made at the October 2025 National Council on Education Meeting,” the statement added.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to policies that enhance access to quality education while aligning with global best practices.

The public has been urged to disregard false claims that JSS and SSS have been scrapped.
