Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has received 75,000 electricity meters from the Federal Government under its national free metering programme during a stakeholder engagement in Benin City on Thursday, February 12, 2026.
The meters are part of a larger allocation of 161,000 units expected for BEDC’s franchise areas in Edo, Delta, Ondo, and Ekiti states.
Of the meters delivered so far, over 38,000 have been earmarked for Edo State, including the Benin, Uromi, and Auchi regions, where installation has already begun.

BEDC officials warned customers not to make any payment for the meters or their installation, emphasizing that they are provided completely free of charge.
Some customers had believed the meters could increase electricity consumption, but officials clarified that the new devices are certified and designed to operate efficiently.
Edo State’s Commissioner for Power, Paul Usenbor, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving electricity supply and announced plans to establish a local meter assembly plant to support the ongoing metering initiative.
