The Federal Government on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, commissioned 37 electric buses as the first batch of a 100-unit mass transit scheme for federal civil servants.
The buses were unveiled at Eagle Square, Abuja, under the Renewed Hope Mass Transit Programme, designed to ease commuting costs and improve workers’ welfare and productivity.
Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, described the project as her “parting gift” to civil servants, coming a day before her tenure ends on Thursday, August 27.
She said the buses would initially operate on selected routes under a pilot scheme before wider deployment, including to Federal Secretariats across the states.
Walson-Jack said high commuting costs affect workers’ finances, safety, punctuality and productivity, adding that reliable and affordable transport would ease the burden.
The buses were acquired through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund. A Special Purpose Vehicle has been established to manage their operation, maintenance and sustainability.

Walson-Jack urged the managers to ensure proper maintenance, transparent routes, safety and effective monitoring, while appealing to civil servants to protect the vehicles.
Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, John Owan Enoh, said the project combined workers’ welfare with Nigeria’s push for technological and industrial development.
He said the programme could reduce the pressure of transportation costs on workers while helping Nigeria build capacity in electric mobility.
Enoh urged the National Automotive Design and Development Council and local manufacturers to develop expertise in battery technology, charging infrastructure, power electronics and electric-vehicle production.
He said stronger local manufacturing would create jobs, deepen industrial capacity and support Nigeria’s ambition to become an automotive hub for Africa.
The rollout builds on the Federal Government’s broader electric-mobility drive. In December 2025, 40 electric buses were introduced as part of efforts to expand cleaner public transportation.
The remaining buses under the 100-unit civil-service programme are expected to be delivered in phases, with the final batch scheduled for December 2026.
