FG Vows Relentless Crackdown As Over 600 Terror Suspects Face Trial

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its determination to combat terrorism, declaring that it will continue to prosecute suspected terrorists and other criminal elements threatening the nation’s security.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), made the declaration on Monday in Abuja at the commencement of a fresh phase of terrorism trials involving hundreds of suspects facing terrorism-related charges.

Addressing journalists, Fagbemi said the ongoing proceedings reflect the administration’s unwavering commitment to tackling terrorism and ensuring the safety of Nigerians across the country.

According to him, the latest exercise marks the fourth phase of terrorism trials conducted since the current administration assumed office.

“The message is clear and straightforward. The government is not taking the issue of terrorism lightly, and that is why these trials are ongoing,” he said.

Fagbemi stressed that the government would continue to deploy every available legal means to confront terrorism and related crimes.

“Terrorism in whatever form or shape will not be tolerated. We will fight with every inch of our blood to ensure that Nigeria remains a safe place for all citizens,” he added.

The AGF disclosed that nearly 600 suspects would be prosecuted during the current phase of the trials.

Providing details, he said 490 suspects were scheduled to appear before the court on Monday, while another 84 would be arraigned on Tuesday. He noted that the figure does not include 102 cases carried over from the previous phase of the exercise.

“In total, we have over 600 cases to handle during this phase, and we have received assurances from the judges handling the matters that they will do their best to conclude as many cases as possible,” he said.

The mass trials form part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to address terrorism, insurgency and other security threats confronting the country.

Authorities say the prosecutions are aimed at ensuring accountability, strengthening national security and demonstrating the government’s resolve to bring perpetrators of terrorism-related offences to justice.
