A fire has destroyed an orphanage in the Banyagi area of Bida Local Government Area of Niger State, displacing children and other occupants.
The inferno broke out at about 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2026, destroying the building and the occupants’ belongings.
The victims, including children and families from vulnerable backgrounds, are now in need of urgent assistance. No official casualty figure had been released as of the time of filing this report.

The Niger State Fire Service responded to the emergency and worked to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby buildings. The operation was reportedly hampered after the responding vehicle ran out of fuel.
The incident has renewed concerns about the operational challenges facing emergency responders and the need for adequate resources to strengthen firefighting capacity.
Residents and concerned citizens have appealed to the Niger State Government, humanitarian organizations, corporate bodies and members of the public to provide the victims with food, clothing, temporary shelter, medical care and other essential relief.
The fire comes as a stark reminder that for vulnerable children and families already facing hardship, the loss of a home and personal belongings can deepen an already difficult struggle for survival.
